Circle A: The Creation of a Free Scientists’ Movement

The aim of this study circle is to create a free scientists’ movement that can lay the foundation for future universities and an alternative academic system whose logic is based on an ethics of care and trust. It is a key priority of this study circle to explore – not just theoretically – but also physically and organizationally ways to create true academic freedom for researchers.

Upcoming events:

1. Spring Symposium “Amo, Ergo Cogito” at University of Gothenburg 5th – 7th of April 2024. Here we will write a manifesto for the free scientists’ movement and a vision of an academic system based on an ethics of care. It will be shared internationally 8th of April. Registration is now closed. The program and detailed purpose of the symposium can be found here.

2. Summer Symposium “Alternative Ways of Organizing Universities” 29th of July – 5th of August 2024 at Løgumkloster Højskole in Denmark.

The call is now open, and we invite participants with or without presentations.

See information below.

Content of the Summer Symposium: It is a key priority of this study circle to explore – not just theoretically – but also physically and organizationally ways to create true academic freedom for researchers. The Summer Symposium will build on the Gothenburg Manifesto (from the Spring Symposium) and the movement that will be created from there. We aim to invite scholars and presenters from alternative academic institutions that can inspire us to organize universities in new ways. We also welcome presentations about historical examples of academic institutions or presentations concerning specific parts of the academic system (fx. management, publishing, science communication or research assessments/metrics).

We will also prepare workshops that are more focused on tangible actions and activities now and in the future.

Deadline: The deadline for registration and/or submission of the title and a brief abstract (5-10 lines) is May 30th, 2024.

Registration: Please register here.
